Yadi-Chapter-7

Chapter -7

 Agri School: A Reminiscence
 page -51

I passed std.12th exam. Due to poor financial condition, I could not appear of higher education. Because at that time D.Ed. And the Agriculture Diploma was of very important. Though my friends had taken admission in  B. A. degree, I took admission in Agricultural School Warud-Pusad.  While studying in the agricultural school, students had to arrange their own cooking in hostel. I had friends like Vani, Jadhav, Pawar as roommates.  Among them, my friend Waman Vani and I used to cook food together.  Because the condition of the house of Waman Vani was also weak. Ramchandra Pawar's house condition was a bit better. Every day of agricultural school was passing. Jadhav sir, Deshmukh sir, Principal Tokekar sir were our teachers in the agricultural school. Rathod and Channe were clerks whose job was to do written work or look after records or accounts in office.
But Jadhav sir and Channe clerk used to pay special attention to the students. They would help us whenever there was any crisis or objection. Working on an agricultural school farm was a lot of fun and a little bit boring.  Because we students had to go to the field as an agricultural related experiments. We used to joke in the field and some student used to sing songs.  Next to the hostel, Mr.  Patil had a farm, where a watchman servant was leading a miserable life with his family.  Though seeing his condition, we were unable to help him.

page-52

Because our economic condition  was also bad.  For a month in the hostel, my mother used to give me two kilos of jowar. I had to spend a whole month in it. Those were very tough days!  Apart from the school dress, I had only one dress and there was no vest. We were living in such a situation and were dreaming of doing something in our life. My roommate Ramchandra Pawar was very practical. Once the kerosene in our stove dried out. Jowar flour was soaked for making bread. I asked for kerosene to Pawar but he had refused.  After that we went to the hut of the servant living next to us with the soaked flour for making  chaupatty and we asked the lady about bringing the flour. Since his family was hungry for a day.  Before our saying, the lady said, "It is good that you brought flour, I feed my children by making chaupatty of this flour. You will be greatly appreciated."  Hearing this, we went back without saying anything.  Being hungry, he went to that hut to make some chaupatty to eat. The serious question was, how to sleep hungry at night?  The side farm was guarded by a person named Ganpat Rathod. Thinking so, we went to the nearby Ganpat Rathod's Jagali at the behest of Vaman Wani.  Because the tiffin of Ganpat Rathod used to come to Jagali every day. Actually we went to Ganpat Rathod to have food. There were talks here and there, but Ganpat did not say us to eat.  I asked, "Did  Ganpat did you eat or not?"  Ganpat said, I have just eaten." How to enjoy the next discussion? Wani and I returned disappointed. But we did not tell Ganpat anything in terms of being hungry or having food.  At night,  I drank two glasses water and went to bed hungry. I woke up early in the morning and went to Pimplekhuta to eat. I was very hungry. My aunt's son Sawairam used to live there. When I went there, my sister-in-law Yashoda had gone to the farm. I immediately went to the farm to call sister-in-law and I told her all the things and without wasting any time she made us a roti and chili thecha and gave it to me to eat.
I ate roti with chilli thecha cooked by Yashoda. I went back to Warud with three jowar roti and thecha. With the passage of time in all this process, Waman and Vani reached me by walking about a kilometer by the way of the canal.  They suddenly appeared in front of me.  Sitting there on the way, they ate roti and chaipatty which I had brought. They drank water from the canal where we used to wash clothes and buttocks and extinguished the fire of the stomach and immediately after calming down he said, "Such a night should never come upon anyone."

page-53

Those were tough days for us!  I never gave up hope on such days.  I was spending my days with great courage. On the other hand, my mother after working as a laborer used to give me money for my education. In such a situation, Dhavji Bhau brought information about the ongoing work of the canal of Painganga dam.  My parents went with Dhawaji Bhau to dig a canal. Our house was locked in Tanda. My younger brother Baban was studying in tribal hostel Pusad. Out of the 60 rupees stipend which I got, I used to give 10 rupees per month to Baban for boarding and 5 rupees for oil and ink. And with the remaining forty five rupees, I used to spend for my entire month. In January, my parents had gone to work to dig a canal. We did not know that my parents had gone to work. We both went home as usual on the occasion of Tilsankrant festival.  We got upset seeing the house locked. The people around told us that the parents had gone to dig the canal. On hearing this, Baban started crying but I immediately stopped my crying. My younger brother would cry a lot and because of this fear, why I held back my tears with great courage .  It was night already. We both were sitting in front of the house. The smell of tur lentil kept on the stove for Puranpoli was spreading all around.  Baban was not yet ready to stop crying. Then Gopi aunt came and took us home and explained a lot to us.  Aunt also started crying. I too freed my buried tears.
Aunt's economic  condition was similar to ours. In such a big Tanda, both of us were sitting in front of the house weeping like orphans on the day of the festival, but not only Tanda's congregation but also the close relatives who lived nearby did not think of giving us two bolus to eat. While we had dinner at Gopi aunt and while we were sleeping, I got Prem Bhau Rathod's message. He had invited me to his house alone. I went to Prem Bhau's house. Ster-in- law, Methi was sitting on the cot.  Prembhau got me a chair to sit on.  I sat on a chair. She gave me a plate of boondi ( sweet) to eat.  But I refused to eat.  Because I remembered that my younger brother is at home and is sitting hungry at home. When he requested me to eat boondi, I had to eat boondi unwillingly. I was missing my parents.  But I was thinking that I am getting Bundi, why not be in others' homes? But whether my parents were getting chutney-roti or not ? So I was worrying. I was shedding tears in the boondi plate. Like boondi-sized tears were falling in the plate.

page-54
Meanwhile Prembhau asked, "Do you want to eat pork?"  But I flatly refused.  At that time, pigs were slaughtered in Tanda two to three times a week.  After eating half the meal, I washed my hands.  My parents must have been eating chutney-roti and Baban must be crying and here I found a plate of boondi, it made me realize the alchemy of God. I could not see any way to understand what was going on in my life. I still remember that fateful night. I am very angry with my relatives in Tanda.  Why?  Didn't understand them?  Maybe they didn't realize our sorrow?  After having dinner, I sat quietly for some time.  I, Methi Bhabhi and Prembhau kept talking. I told them about sleeping. They permitted me to sleep. From there I came to Gopi Aunty's house.  It was late night.  And ensured that Baban fell asleep. Because today I was his mother and father and everything.  Considering many thoughts, I too fell asleep on the bed.  I woke up in the morning.  Leaving Baban in boarding, I went on with a rented bicycle to meet my parents. I had not eaten properly.  I was early to leave in the morning. That's why didn't even eat in the morning.  In such a situation, I reached Savargaon by bicycle.  Wanted to eat there but no one came home from the farm. It was around 4 to 5 o'clock.  I went straight to Shembalpimpri. It was evening and getting dark. Different thoughts were coming in my mind.  I was hungry and did not know the exact location of my parents. The dade body was cremated near a village near Shembalpimpri. Since the fire was not put out there, fire and smoke was coming out.  Seeing this I was terrified.  And in a frightening atmosphere, I walked ahead on a bicycle from the side of the canal alone. After walking some distance the camp appeared.  Putting the cycle aside, I entered the camp and wake up the watchman. The watchman was drunk and intoxicated. And since he was Telugu, he could not understand what I meant. I didn't understand what he was saying because of  language barriers. But I tried to explain to him a little.  "Adgadu phatgadu kandamakdu satlam set funtlu !" A little bit I consider his saying and I guess that's what he meant, the workers are far away from here and will be near the drain, go ahead from here.. walk away..!"  Keeping in mind the meaning of what he said, I started moving forward. I saw a clogged ditch in front. I kept on carrying my cycle through the water of that ditch. It was late night. Workers were not even visible here?  In between, the sound of night insects and strong winds made me realize the horrors of that night. So there was an intense feeling of fear in my mind.

page-55
But I was letting go of fear by hoping to meet my mother. Why did my mother come to work so far without informing me?  Many such questions were coming in my mind. On the way ahead, I saw a hut in front of me. I guessed that it would be the hut of the watchman of the site. I parked the cycle on the road and proceeded towards the hut.  Looking into the hut, I saw two children sleeping on a cot and on the other side a couple hugging each other. Seeing that scene, I turned from there. After stopping for a while, I thought that I have never seen such a scene.  After that I went towards the back hut and called out. A person was shocked by my voice and started  inquiring me. I told the whole truth and asked him for water to drink.  Then the woman, wearing her clothes properly in the hut, brought water and asked me, "Why were you shouting from the road, had to come straight to the hut."  I said, "I couldn't come because I thought it might be a dog here". They agreed with me and made sure that I didn't see anything. Being a watchman, he knew everything. He informed me to proceed. By then it was two o'clock in the night.  I started moving forward.  Within no time the whole congregation was sleeping wrapped in dhoti on the banks of the canal. Seeing the dhoti, I understood that this would be a site of Banjara community.  Because even in Tanda there are no blankets to cover, which are not enough even for children? As a result, more than half of the people in Tanda sleep covering a dhoti.  Still sleeping today.  I put my bicycle and wondered where would my parents be?  About 50-60 couples were sleeping in the open field coveringing dhoti.  It looked as if there was a queue of bodies of those killed in the train accident. It was three o'clock in the morning. The dim light of the moon was spread all around.  I called my mother, "Yadi."  Mother immediately woke up on hearing my voice.  As soon as I went to my mother, the mother woke up the father in a hurry. Mother hugged  me crying  and said, "Son, how did you come here late at night? Everyone woke up with their mother's crying. I was so hungry that I asked my mother for roti  and mother gave me roti and bumbla chutney. Bumbla chutney is the favorite dish of the Banjara community. I ate a full meal and after eating I told them only the half-story of the incident. Later the  the congregation who had come to the camp to work returned to their respective places to sleep.

page-56
I, my parents slept covering dhoti.  I got up early in the morning. I told the mother the truth of the incident that happened to me in Tanda on the day of Tilsankrant. And after eating the roti and chutney of bumbla made by the mother and th wiping away the tears in her eyes, I walked towards Pusad.  Mother was crying a lot. I was going ahead with only ten rupees for the rented bicycle. After walking some distance, the mother's face disappeared and the sound of crying was not heard.
Once a game was played on behalf of the school in Wardha.  For this, the students of the school were working hard by playing sports for eight days.  Some were practicing for kabaddi, wrestling, kho-kho, volleyball and I was also preparing for kho-kho. The teams were selected for the match. I was selected for the Kho-Kho team.  After a few days it was time to go to Wardha. I didn't even have money to spend. I was getting worried.  But whom to tell? But It was necessary to go to Wardha.  Somehow, I reached Wardha with the team.  Jadhav sir brought all the team to Wardha.  I was happy coming to a big city for the first time.  But the pain of not having money was also an important problem for me. We used to get 20 rupees for the morning meal and 20 rupees in the evening.  So I used to spend the day having breakfast of Rs 10 in the morning and used to save the remaining Rs 10. Because even in that situation I used to miss my sister Godavari and future wife Sita. I always wanted to carry ribbons, earrings, pins and rings for them. The performance of our game was excellent. The Kho-Kho and Kabaddi team won the Shield and number to Warud School.  Jadhav sir was very happy to see the performance of our game. On that day, sir fed all the players breakfast with his own money.  That day, I saved my entire 20 rupees. There was a plan to leave in the evening but Sir gave everyone the freedom to see Wardha. Some children went to see a movie.  But my friend and I went straight to Pavanar and Sevagram. There we saw Bapu Kuti closely. We understood everything about this kuti and we bowed there.  We realized that Bapu gave freedom to the country by staying in such a small kuti-hut.  Nowadays, even ones wife cannot be given the freedom to lead a simple life in the house made by taking loan from HDFC. Is this a tragedy!  Seeing the women and men who came to Pavnar from India and abroad and their sacrificial attitude, my mind got a different turn. Keeping all this in mind we returned to Wardha.

Page-57
It was afternoon. I bought  ribbons, earrings, pins, rings for Godavari and Sita and went to the camp with great joy. From there we were  getting ready to go Pusad. We also made preparations, with everyone I came to the bus-stand and caught the bus for Pusad. I was very happy seeing Sita's articles in the bus. We came to Warud with happy faces thinking of different ideas. But Wani did not come with us. He styed in the hostel. maybe he'll be upset. Although Wani was  not playing any sport, we deliberately asked Jadhav to join him the wrestling team. And the next year, we went to play Amaravati. The first day was the first round of wrestling. We had made Wani a wrestler.  With great curiosity we started looking at Wani.  As soon as Vani came on the ground, the person in front hit Wani. The Wani fell on the spot and did not get up again. He was defeated.  Being nervous, he went for his village without informing anyone from Amravati. Wani had not actually seen any wrestling innings, or read the strategy about innings in the book. How Wani Vaman Bhoru!  Marathi drama was staged in the school. The name of the Marathi play was 'Pudhari Pahije'.  I was given the role of Ramu Sutar.  I had brought necessary clothes for each character from Warud Tanda.  At that time there were many programs like singing, mimicry, comedy. Warud Tanda's troupe was always present to watch the program. Those days were of great joy. Some of the hostel children used to quarrel a lot and always arguing. They used to do things like breaking the electrical wires of the hostel and damaging the wall. However, I have never behave such an attitude.  I have always been like an ideal student believing that do not let others be hurted by me in any way.  But the school principal was suspicious about me. During the school exam, he snatched my paper of the previous exam for an hour ago without reason by telling the exam head. I came out of the examination hall and I met the headmaster Mr. Tokekar sir. He talked to me about the power lines regarding the hostel. I appealed to the headmaster that my house does not have electricity line, I do not have farm and I have a hut so why do I need electric wires?  That's how I appealed him.  Channe Babu, acting as a mediator, cleared the headmaster's doubts and lastly the invigilator allowed me to solve the paper for a full hour. In the evening, I told the headmaster all the real facts about the hostel. The headmaster's misunderstanding about me was completely cleared. But the regret that sir gave me is still in my mind.

page-58
Bedbugs and lice were found in the clothes of students and it was  common in hostel. Because of this, one day I could not sleep.  I woke up in the middle of the night and took out my vest, which had big lice. I put the vest on the wire.  There were many bed bugs in the bed and cot. I somehow fell asleep that day.  If I told anyone, I would have made fun of myself. So without informing anyone, I went to class and came to the hostel after the class left. I didn't have a vest. That's why I started looking for other boys wearing vests or not.  Ramchandra Pawar, Vaman Wani, Vijay Jadhav also kept their vests on the wire. I thought now the thief could be found now.  I smiled and asked everyone, Then turned to Pawar and said, "Pawar, " why are you not wearing a vest?
He said in a low voice, "No, what's in it?  That's how I got the answer.  I said, 'Look what a great coincidence! Today all four of us roommates have come to college without a vest. Wani and Jadhav did not say anything about this. I was sure their vests would have lice. I saw their vests lying on the wire. There were more animal-lice roaming around on their vest than my vest. Such as, there is no famine of animals in the forests of Africa. By then everyone had noticed this issue. When I told them about bedbugs and lice, everyone started laughing out loudly. Soon the news spread to the hostel and everyone had to admit that their vests and beds also had bedbugs and lice.  Everyone put their beds and cot in the sun light and went to the canal to wash their clothes. And all the boys celebrated the lice, scabies eradication program in the hostel to get rid of it. In Warud Tanda, there was a great personality named R. D.  He had earned good wealth with hard work and selflessness. His had also horticulture and irrigated farming was also . We used to go his fields regularly for study. Cheap Dairy milk was available in the hostel.  But I never bought milk due to my financial constraints. One day I deliberately took milk from Punjab Jadhav and after drinking it, Wani, Pawar and other students went to study in R.D. brother's farm. There was a wooden plank hut near the canal. I used to sleep in that hut while studying in the afternoon.  We reached the hostel in the evening. After having dinner and study, we all went to sleep.

page-59
One day around midnight, I dreamed that I had a snake around my neck. I jumped out of bed, screaming and trying to get out and fell towards the door. I was bleeding from my head.  My friends  woke up abruptly. They held me tightly.  At the same time, Channe Babu came to the hostel after hearing my screaming. Likewise, he used to sleep late. Because his wife was a resident of Nagpur and he was the only householder living here.  All the students of the hostel woke up.  I was bleeding from my head.  Channe Babu interrogated me.  I told him the story of the dream. He did not believe my words. He scolded the roommate and went to his quarter. My head was still bleeding. Finally I was given first aid by Dr. Namdev Rathod from Warud Tanda. I somehow slept at night and in the morning Principal Tokekar sir entered the hostel with all the teachers. They must have suspected that someone had beaten me because of the quarrels. So he seriously questioned my roommates and other students.  Eventually the case reached the police. But in the end, I assured Sir that the dream I saw is a reality and I have no doubts about anyone. Everyone heaved a sigh of relief.

When I went to Pusad for some work, I came to know that my mother has reached the hospital with Haribhau. As soon as I reached the hospital, mother appeared me. There was not even a veil on the forehead of the mother. I wondered how my mother must have spent the nights in these cold days. I cried seeing the pathetic condition of my mother. Mother also started crying. Both of us were crying when the ration shopkeeper, Prithvi came, he explained to me in detail.  When I used to write his ration record, he gave me 60 rupees. I bought a shawl for my mother and came to the hostel with a sad heart with remaining money.

At that time I thought, for how many days will this poverty haunt us?  When are we going to get out of this or not?  That's how I was feeling restless. That's when I saw the movie "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar".  In that film, Nirupama Roy's son Amitabh overcomes poverty and becomes a millionaire.  I felt with hope that my fate would also be flourished. The cinema of that time had a sense of it.  Otherwise, in today's film "Aati kya Khandala... to go to Khandala or go to Kabarsthan...! What to do with the world?. Such good and bad incidents were happening. In such a situation, I didn't neglected my studies.

page-60

Because most of the students of our next batch got the job of Gramsevak. He had also distributed pedhas-sweets in school. But I did not get any guidance from anyone. That was our misfortune!  Because if I had got a mentor at that time, I would have passed with good marks or would have taken higher education. But day by day there were many obstacles in mu life due to poor economic conditions.  However, in such a difficult situation, I passed  agriculture diploma with seventy nine percentage. All the teachers praised me and they greeted me to get the job soon. At that time the job of Gramsevak was available very quickly.  My passing of agri diploma had changed the atmosphere of my house. Mother was tired of working every day. She sincerely believed that I would also get a job soon and always wondered when she would get rid of work  But I was sure that I would certainly get the job.

Agri School: A reminiscence
page -51

A Remarkable Coincidence

 page-45
My aunt's daughter, Pantibai had come to my Tanda. My brother-in-law, Rabsing was a watchman on the Isapur dam. Pantibai's mundane affairs was good so far.
I was curious to see the Poklen machines and large machinery at work, involved in the construction of the dam. I went to see Isapur dam with Pantibai. I stayed on the dam for two-three days. Rabsingh and I used to visit the dam site every morning. As everyone knew  Rabsing, I sat in the tipper carrying the soil all day long. I used to enjoy it a lot. The tipper filled with soil was emptied automatically. I found it very awkward seeing this. After having fun at the dam, I headed towards Pusad. On that way Savargaon was my uncle's village.  Since I had not had food in the morning, I decided to get down at Savargaon (Bamgla) village on that route and incidentally I reached Savargaon. My grandmother and Mama lived in Savargaon. I went straight to my grandmother's house from the bus stand and asked about getting meal before having tea there. grandmother immediately served  me chupatty and gram flour-besan in eating . As I was eating chupatty, a lovely girl came and sat beside me.  She had a smiling round face, puffy cheeks, a semi-blonde complexion, long curly hair, in addition to looking good, she was quite tall. While eating roti, I used to look at the girl and more thought came in my mind and I was thinking differently.

page-46

"Somebody got it..!! " The girl got up and went.I came to know that if she is a wife, then it should be like this! I had never been to Savargaon. Later I came to know that she is my elder maternal uncle's daughter. The girl's name was Sita, she knew me that I was the son of Thandewali aunt. But I didn't know her.  As soon as she told about me at home, I was invited for tea.  Similarly, that is how I was in a hurry to see Sita.  I soon went to maternal uncle's house for tea. As soon as I sat there, the girl offered me tea.  As I was having tea, maternal uncle, aunt and Atmaram Bhau interrogated me and they requested me to stay there. I was just pretending to go but they urged me to stay in Savargaon for a day or two.  Since I wanted to stay there, I stayed there without any hesitation. During those two or three days, Sita and I got to know each other better. I thought maybe that girl looking at my hippi(head hairstyle) as she must have noticed Mithun Chakraborty in me.  Usually my hairstyle was in different style. (My hairstyle, typically an elaborate one) I thoroughly enjoyed my two-three days stay in Savgaon. At that time I understood that if I had not come to Savargaon for dinner, I might not have got me Sita as a life partner-wife. On the third day, I requested maternal uncle, aunt to send Sita with me. Asking me some sub-questions maternal uncle and aunt agreed to send Sita with me. We both got on the bus and started our journey towards Pusad.  In the bus I remembered the hero-Sachin of 'Nadiya Ke Paar' movie and I started seeing Sachin in myself. But Sita didn't say anything to me in the bus. She was sitting peacefully keeping silence.  After sometime we got down at Pusad bus stand. We ate Alubonda in the hotel and took a bus for Shelu. We got down at the Selu bus-stop and started on the narrow road towards the side of my Tanda the narrow path (Pandan in Marathi) means a narrow path covered trees and shrubs on both sides. We started walking slowly. After a while Sita asked me, "Why are you taking me off this road? I said, "Are you afraid to come with me?" Sita said, "No, but the road is rough" I replied  , "Don't you believe me?  But she started walking with me without saying anything.  At last we both reached Tanda. Only one rumor spread in Tanda.  "Punjab Whor Mamaran Chhori Layoch!  (Punjab has brought his maternal uncle's daughter to Tanda) Everyone in my family loved Sita and was liked by all. After staying for a few days, along with Sita, my father and mother went to Savargaon to do my engagement. And they confirmed my engagement.  Is this a really funny incident or not?  Went to maternal uncle's house for meal and chose future life partner (wife)!

page-47
For about four-five years, my engagement remained the same.  I used to visit Savargaon from time to time. In the evening we used to talk and Sita used to sit next to me and listen me. He was very interested in washing my clothes.  The day I went back to Pusad, she didn't want to eat and was very nervous. While washing my clothes, other girls used to tease and fun of Sita. I used to get this news from my sister. Sometimes I used to talk to him secretly.  But she just nodded. I would secretly givr her ribbons,  and rings. It was our true love story going ahead. When I was in the hostel, I wasted my precious time frequently remembering Sita.  We started talking to each other very closely. But there was not the slightest sign of physical attraction between us. She was simple-hearted and think I am also simple-minded. This might not seem true to the youngsters of today!  But that tenure was different. We fell in love with each other. I really think that if one (couple) want to understand each other then one should not get married for at least four or five years after engagement. Otherwise, get married on the eighth day after the engagement and in a month there is four hundred and ninety eight.(498-The Indian Penal Code) Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty.

The convoy of Tanda started going on...

It is said that "Thad" Tanda was settled by Bhasu Naik.  At that time there were rich, stalwart congregation like Wadavalo, Madhiwalo, Mannu Naik, Jeram Naik in Tanda. This congregation were always worried about the future of Tanda and used to say in the meeting, "Ek dan ye tander tandali viya" (One Tanda will be devided into two). As the above congregation became more dear to God, there were many disasters on Tanda and some groups started going out of the tando to the another villages. I remember, in the beginning the departure of the Harwat family, after that Dalpat uncle and his family moved to Movza Tanda. Tanda continued to be distributed.  But nobody paid attention. An all-rounder named Vikram was the trader-vatandars of twelve villages and did the same work for generations of Tanda. He took Motising maternal uncle to Kajaleshwar (Akola).  I still remember that Motising uncle's leaving the village was a very regrettable thing. When I cherish this incident, tears rolled down from my eyes. Motising uncle had thirty-forty acres of farmland, five-six servants, ten-twelve buffaloes,  brothers like Gulab, Sawai Maharaj, wife like righteous wife- Dharmi. But falling in the trap of Vikram Raja, Motising uncle decided to leave Tanda. In the end, relatives and all the people of the village said goodbye to Motising uncle in front of Maroti's temple.

page-49
All the women of Tanda hugged Motising uncle and cried a lot.  Tears welled up in my eyes seeing this painful incident. Motising uncle left for Akola with his convoy. Gambhir uncle was left alone in Tanda.  All his five brothers and mother had left Tanda.  At that time someone in Tanda had said. " Ek dan jater pakheru jathach javach" Means the birds also return to their nesting destination. That man's words had come true. A few years later, Motisingh uncle came back to Tanda.
I remember, after that the Kelut family left Tanda and settled down anywhere. In this way, many families kept on leaving Tanda.  Other poor people had to suffer unnecessarily because of brother-brother quarrels. The rest of the congregation was also not afraid of the consequences. They were all ready to face any situation and obstacles. The circumstance in Tanda was so severe that each other's animals were not allowed to enter the farm. The climate of Tanda continued to be very bad and disruptive. I think these issues and disputes could have been resolved by compromise.  But some people's selfishness was visible in this regard. Because most of the people's farming was around Tanda therefore the attraction of the farm must have been the reason behind this.

What about the poor workers and agriculture labourers?  Where Tanda used to go, they used to go there. Perhaps, living in Tanda would not be acceptable to God.  Not only this, it was decided that a separate Tanda would come out from original Tanda. Only because of Tanda's emotional attachment to the soil and many of their generations have rested there and they did not want to leave Tanda.  But there was no remedies. It was mandatory for them to leave Tanda. All Tanda's main congregation came together and decided to leave Tanda. It was decided to carry their goods by tractor, truck and  bullock cart. Tanda was ready to find the path of a future life. The convoy of Tanda started going on the appointed day. Tanda's little & eldest children, animals and old people took the troupe and convoy to the place where Tanda had settled. Here the work of demolishing walls, removing tin, removing wood etc. started in Tanda.  There were tears in everyone's eyes. As soon as the walls of the house were being demolished, their emotional connection to the four walls of the house was more evident from this. Because they had been living happily in the corner of the four walls of the house for many years.   This continued separation from the motherland was extremely painful. The convoy of all the bullock carts started going towards eastern Tandas.

As the bullock carts started moving slowly, the distance between the old Tanda gradually increased. Although Tanda was moving forward, all eyes were fixed on the backward. Within a few days the new Tanda was settled and fragmented, disjunct and disjointed and the image of the old Tanda persists even today in Tanda. According to Nayak, "Tander Tandali Vhiya" a Tanda would split into two Tanda, however, this statement turned out to be true. But Nayak also said that
Ek dan jater pakheru jathach javach" the birds also return to their nesting destination.

Page-50
I am sure that one day Tanda will go to the place of the old Tanda. The difference between the old and the new Tanda is visible even today.  At that time an elders and old men were  respected in Tanda. The younger brother did not speak anything in front of the elder brother. Everyone had a feeling of awe, fear and respect. If the elders were seen passing from the front of the house, the women standing in the courtyard would go inside the house with placing their veils over their heads. No women even dared to talk before elders. Today if the husband is sitting around, the wife calls him out loudly.
'Ye bero!  Even today in the Banjara community, the husband is called bero- deaf and the wife is called vendi-mad. God only knows how the world of Bero and Wendy would go on. It is a riddle or a mystery. Today younger and elder brothers are seen sitting together and playing gambling. Quarrel, disputes and alcohol addiction is increasing day by day. Today, arrogance, ego, pretension, improbity and dishonesty are visible in Tanda. Today, Tanda, who
nurtures glorious Banjara culture, taking care of thier cattle and serving parents, is running towards the city. Just because of Ratan Khatri's attachment!  Tanda's congregation has changed its attitude not only towards the society but also towards its family.  The growing enmity between brother-brother and father-son, growing distance between daughter and son- neglecting wife and daughter-in-law, really lead to Tanda's downfall?  Will it be like that?  It seems, Tanda went on... and kept going on?  Isn't it?

(My hairstyle, typically an elaborate one)

Chapter-4
 Entering Pushpavanti City
  Page-37

In July 1976, I entered Pushpavanti city. Pusad town is known as Pushpavanti. I had got my number in Kashtwar school in this city for admission of 8th class. The government student hostel was in Motinagar for the accommodation of students. For this, M.C.  sir helped a lot in getting my admissions in the town. That's why I was able to come to such a good place.  School started and the children of the town used to come to school wearing nice clothes. My mind was always jealous seeing this. I used to study under the light of the chimney (kerosene lamp) in Tanda.  But now I get to read in electric lamp. There I could not sleep some days  in the hostel because I always missed my mother. Mother used to come to the weekly market of Pusad every Sunday. I used to walk to the market to meet my mother after meal.  Mother used to sit at the Bhajewale shop in the market.  As soon as I meet my mother, she would hug me and bring the bread and we both ate with gravy of Alubonda. Alubonda was a popular food item at that time like Khichdi of Waranga, Shrikhand of Varana, sweets-Mithayi of Allahabad. My mother used to give me some money and I used to go to Tukaram temple with her, carrying two-four rupee market goods.

page-38
From there, my mother used to go to the village via the farm and I used to walk on the paved road to the Motinagar hostel. She used to weep while leaving me alone. I would also not stop my weeping. While we both weeping,  the other ladies of Tanda, who came with mother for market, tried to convince mother and me. My mother used to say goodbye to me while weeping. And I too used to reach Motinagar hostel while weeping. This happened every Sunday. My mother was only worried about me. I still remember that in the three years from 8th to 10th, my mother never avoided the weekly bazar on Sundays. Even though it was raining continuously during the rainy season, Mother used to come to Pusad  for market I slowly rolled into the atmosphere of Pusad and continued to be able to understand the outside world. There wete a lot of cycles and rickshaws in Pusad. At that time, I really wanted to sit in a rickshaw but that wish of mine was never fulfilled. Narayan was my best friend in boarding.  Babu Aade and Sunil Rathod were my closest in class. Manjula Aunty was very beautiful in boarding. She was a resident of Nagpur city. He was very fond of watching movies.  He never told us kids whether she had a home or kids. Once Manjula Aunty took me and friend Narayan to see a cinema called 'Sanyasi.'  At that time we were studying in class 8 and we were little one by age.  Manjula Aunty had bought the ticket for Ladies Cabin. And all three of us sat in the ladies cabin to see cinema.  When it's dark, shortly after, the movie started.  The ladies sitting in the ladies cabin burst into laughter when the hero-heroine's flare-up scene was on display.  Ish... what a woman...  nothing!  Such speaking started in a low voice.  Many times she used to talk below the waist. They probably only knew that we are small and whether we are sitting near them or not.  At that time, we used to have real fun not of films but of their talking. Then I realized how free Indian women. Once in the morning a snake came out in the boarding. All the students started screaming. Half of the students lived in the Jharkar Bhawan next to our hostel. A boy, Vasanta of Gahuli village smiled, and holding that snake alive in his hand and with running he brought it on the road. The people of the surrounding gathered around and thanked Vasanta and congratulated him heartily.  How he caught the snake alive remained a mystery. Winter days had started. I knew very well the fact that we did not have enough beds at home. On boarding, I had got a Solapuri bed sheet and a nice big blanket. I went home and gave my blanket to my mother so that my mother and other siblings would not shiver in the winter days. Even though my house was in such a terrible state, but my mother was teaching me with great courage without getting tired.

page-39
When I used to go home my mother was very happy and used to ask me, 'Do you like to stay in Pusad?  I used to say 'yes'. The day I returned to Pusad, my mother did not eat. My mother used to send me pusad while crying.  Sometimes I don't even know why my mother used to cry.  But her poverty was so great that she could do nothing except crying. Kanhav sir was my class teacher. He was a very funny and jovial person. Once before class started, my classmate Prakash Nandre drew a cartoon on the board.  Kanhav sir came to the class and all the children stood up.  When sir saw the cartoon on the board, his mood got spoiled. He started asking the children one by one.  But the awe of Prakash was so much that no one was ready to take his name. Sir started beating all the students one after the other with sticks. When my number came, the sir asked me, "Who has drew a picture?"  'Prakash Nandre' I said. I escaped being punishment. Sir beats up Prakash Nandre and let him out of the class. I was realizing in class that Prakash Nandre would not skip without beating me this evening.
Frightened, I was passing through Yashwant Rang Mandir. Prakash Nandre and his companions, who were sitting there hiding, pounced on me and started beating me. I started screaming loudly. But my voice did not reach anyone because of the football game that was going on beside. I fell down and started running away without thinking. They followed me till Tukaram temple. I reached the hostel crying. I told the entire fact to Manjula aunty. Manjula's aunty felt very sad. She insisted on going to Prakash's house. But I didn't let him go. Because Prakash's father was the driver of the police car.  The next day I didn't tell anyone in class because I didn't know how hard it was to tell the truth. I remember many such incidents.  How many events would I write about ? I used to accompany in the hostel with Babu Aade, Sunil Rathod. While all the boys were having food in the hostel, but one boy was not coming to eat. Nana called him but he did not come.  Nana was a lovely servant of the hostel. Eventually the hostel superintendent urged him to have food. After pausing for a moment,
But after stopping for a while, the boy slapped sir's face without thinking.  Sir ran away from there in fear. The boy started hissing... started jumping...! Although we came to know later that there was an influence of ghost on him. we thought that a person could not be so dared without having a ghost in his body.

In such an circumstances, I passed class 8th and 9th,  I still remember that at that time on one passed the matriculation examination from my Tanda.  So when I was matriculated, Tand had high expectations from me.  Tanda wanted me to pass the matriculation examination with good marks. I also started studying diligently for the exam. I even stopped going home.  I used to go to Tanda to meet his mother only on Sundays.
Now my mother also had patience.  Because she had realized that I was going to pass the matriculation examination.  My matriculation exam was in girls school.  At that time it was strictly prohibited cheating in the exam...!  If the student looked back, he would be taken out of the examination hall. There was Dande Madam in Koshatwar school at that time. Students who have studied in this school will definitely know how disciplined she was. The matriculation exams was approaching. Tarachand, Hanjari, Vishnu and many other friends of Tanda were with me in school. But it was very difficult to get education because everyone's financial condition was fragile.  Similarly, Hanjari's family did not have money to pay boarding fees, so he had to stay at home during the exam.  Hanjari's parents were labourers. The entire family depended on wages. The family had no choice but to drop Hanjari out of school.  What a tough days those were! Whenever I remember those days, tears rolled down to my cheeks. In such a situation, my mother never let me down but enabled me to study regularly.  Because of not paying  boarding fees, how unfortunate it was for Hanjari to stay at home and drop from school during school exams!  I think, the reason for this was society and social system!  Wouldn't any of the eminent person in Tanda realize that one of the boys of Tandya is being deprived of matriculation examination for such a trivial reason?  It may have realized them, but if the son of a poor man, whose parents work in their field, goes on learning, what will happen to their farming tomorrow?  Who will come to work in their field ? Due to this fear, none of the eminent or wealthy person in Tanda would have helped to pay the fee of that poor boy. Such was the tense atmosphere in Tanda.  But that boy is working in the police force today. I still remember my mother holding my matriculation marksheet in both hand, looking at it alike and wiping her eyes with one hand whispering to herself that my son had matriculated. I still don't understand her insistence to see matriculation marksheet even though she was illiterate.

page-41

At last, the mother took a marksheet in her hand and said, "What a wonderful piece of paper!Son, well done, you passed the exam." What examination mean? What does she know? First class, second class ? She was the one who knew only to pass the exam. Even now when my daughter passed  exam and comes home with the marksheet,  the mother has to show the marksheet first because she is sitting at the door waiting. As soon as daughter comes, she asks, "Bandu, 'Show me your marksheet?'  I see the merit sheet only after the mother sees the mark sheet.  I still ask my mother, "Mom, what do you mean by that? To this my mother says, "The thickness of the paper gives me an idea of the passing." Today, I tell my sons the incident of mother taking my matriculation certificate in hand. My mother had endured many hardships for my education. Not only this, What's more !my younger sister Godavari  I was also dropped out of school and forced to work. I can never forget the hard work of Godavari what she did for me. It is impossible to get rid of mother's debt. We were going through many difficulties. But without flaunting her courage, she overcame all difficulties and completed my education.

Oo...Samba... how many men were there?  (Sholay) A hit movie series was released. 1978-79 was that year. I love to watch movies. But I didn't have money in my pocket and never even seen pocket of money. But the desire to watch movies kept increasing. I used to go to Manik Talkies to watch movies at the right time without being absent in class. Tanda's people used to come to watch movies. They didn't know how to get tickets in the crowd. They used to ask me to get tickets and forced me to take an extra ticket. I could have denied him but I did not say so. I used sit in third call gallery to watch the film.  At that time I would think about third class, second class, first class, is this not racism?  Why isn't everyone in the same class?  I wondered, why do the people who sit in front of the meetings and conferences sit at the back in the theatres? It was an unsolved puzzle for me. After the cinema was over, I used to see people coming down from that balcony. I wondered when would I get a chance to sit in the balcony. As school has A, B, C, D section according to the class. Students of Brahmin or Komati community were in A and B section and Gond, Labhani and other community students in C and D section.  Isn't this really injustice to children?  Maharashtra is the land of saints.  Why would the words, action and saphorism of these great leaders, saints of this region not be implemented?

   page-42

Why such injustice in this country where is the basic principles of equality? Many such questions come to my mind. But there is no solution. There is a saying in Marathi, "Tond dabun bukyancha maar!"  As some children had come home avoided their examination my mother had persuaded the parents of the children to send them back to school.  But some congregations were in no mood to listen.  Because they did not understand the importance of education. They believed that the boy would come home and work as a laborer in their field. My mother encouraged me to study regularly. She was always careful not to disturb me but faced troubles herself. She did not let me have any problem but seeing my friend drop out of school mother feel very sad. Balirambhau had always helped me in my education.  Many times he was asked for money but he never refused.  At that time he had only passion for education. No one paid any attention to useless things.  At that time there was no such prevalence of private tuition classes as today.  Nowadays education is not possible without tuition and this kind of situation remains in the education sector. What will happen in the field of education? Only God knows!  I returned home after my matriculation exam.  I was sure that I would pass the exam.  Since there was a record in Tanda that no one had passed the matriculation examination.
So there was no guarantee to others in Tanda whether I would pass the exam or not. Sadashiv Bhau was the only education lover in Tanda who believed in my result.
The day of exam results has arrived. We went to Pusad on foot.  There was such a fear in my mind as to what would happen. On the way we saw a monkey on a tree.  A boy among us said that seeing a monkey's black face is considered inauspicious. Listening this, I got very scared. We went straight to the Koshatwar school. I looked at the board where the result was displayed. My number was in the passing list. However, my friend, Vishnu failed the exam. I was very happy seeing my result. I remembered the story of the monkeys who supported Lord Ramachandra in Lanka.  What a black face! Meaningless thing!  Just a horror story... ! On reaching the square, Sadashiv Bhau called us and made sure as I passed. He paid me ten rupees to distribute the pedha-sweet. I happily came home on foot with the pedha.
As soon as I came home, I took  my grandparents and mother's blessings. That day my mother's face glowed like the day I got a job.  I think these two events in a mother's life must be indescribable. Now I was going to college...! There was great curiosity.  Now, Mother had also stopped weeping. The mother was very happy seeing me as a supporter for her. There was only Phulsing Naik College in Pusad. When Phulsing Naik was alive, he forced Vasantrao Naik to start college. What a visionary he was!  It was his strong wish and dream that the children of the Tanda should become B.A. M.A.

  page-43
When I admitted in class 11th, I had to take a loan from the bank for buffalo because the financial condition of my family was critical.  At that time the poverty alleviation campaign was in full swing. Loan approved from State Bank.  Despite having loan to two buffaloes, only one buffalo got by loan. While two buffalo loans are payable as per government norms, the bank gave only one buffalo.  How can a person go above the poverty line?  The loan had to be repaid at Rs.60 per month.  The milk of buffalo was 2-3 liters per day and forty-sixty rupees in a week of twenty liters.  At that time milk was of Rs 2 per litre. No matter how much water is mixed in the milk, if the hotel owner has prepared the khwa, as in hindi saying, "Dudh ka dudh aur Pani ka pani! From an economic point of view, at that time, the mother got support in this way. That is, the mother stopped her working.  Mother used to bring grass for the buffalo and I used to sell milk and go to college. Some installments were paid in the bank. But Bank did not allot second buffalo. The buffalo was not giving milk. Same day again!  The mother had to work as a laborer to buy grass for the buffalo. The buffalo became pregnant. Sister got engagement for her marriage. Selling the buffalo made sister's hands yellow. The bank loan kept increasing day by day. In V. P. Singh's political tenure debt must have been forgiven. I entered the 12th commerce and made arrangements to stay in the hostel.   I still  remember those college days. Wearing full pants was allowed. It doesn't matter even if the hair on the head grows longer. It was a time of bell-bottom fashion. As I started feeling attracted to girls in college, my masculinity was slowly waking up.
Our friend, Sada Aade was always passionate about teasing girls.  We have seen him several times taking out rose from the head of girls while going down the stairs of the college. He used to tell funny stories. I never dared to tease girls It may not be.. because my zodiac is Virgo?  I have also seen a man of Leo zodiac being humiliated oftenly. let it avoid...!  Mom should get little bit help and get money for my education, I got a job of record writing of Bhoodan movement in Chandusing Nayak's office. I used to get Rs 15-20 a week for the work I did. It was the task of writing the records of the farmers in the Bhoodan movement.  I used to write records at night and go to college during the day. In such a situation, I did not give up my hopes and kept on going patiently.  If a person has confidence, then he moves towards success and thete no doubt about it.

page-44

After the demise of the reverend Vasantrao Naik, father had also quit his job. Father could not work as before.  He had been cooking in the bungalow for many years therefore he was tired of cooking. His eyesight was deteriorating day by day. Our family depended only on the wages of Mother and Godavari. So house was only run by mother and Godavari as labourers. It might have happened that father has sold the two acres of land he got from my grandfather or he had been looted by his nearest relatives. It could be a big history.  I'll have to write a separate book on this!  Baba himself had seen people like Himalaya while doing his job. My days were spent in his companionship. That's why Father always taught me to live a self-reliant life and be honest with myself. He always used to say that one should face averse conditions  with patience but not run away from fear of suffering and hardship.

World Banjara Day

Mr. D. Rama Naik took the historic initiative to organize "World Roma-Banjara Day" in India. Compiled by-  Dr. Dinesh Sewa...
