  मे , १९७२ ते १९७५पर्यंत आमदार म्हणून मी काम केले. या तीन वर्षाच्या काळात विधानसभेत आम्ही नाईक साहेबांना  सातत्याने विरोध केला. आमचा व त्यांचा वैचारिक संघर्ष ठामपणे चालू होता. पण व्यक्ती या नात्याने त्यांनी आमच्याबद्धल कटूता दाखविली नाही. १९७२ साली दुष्काळामध्ये भरमसाठ वाढलेल्या महागाईबद्धल आम्ही मोर्चा काढला होता.  १० - १२ हजार बायका हातात लाटणे घेऊन घोषणा देत मोर्चात सामील झाल्या होत्या. सचिवालयात मंत्रीमंडळाची बैठक चालू होती. पोलीस प्रमुखांचे म्हणणे होते की आम्ही परत निघून जावे. परंतु मुख्यमंत्र्यांनी आमच्यासमोर येऊन आपले काय म्हणणे आहे ? ते सांगावे असे आम्हास ठामपणे सांगितले. पोलीसांना काय करावे ते कळेना. एखादे लाटणे कुणी फेकून मारले तर ? परंतु मी पोलीस कमीशनरला तसे होणार नाही हे विश्वासाने सांगितले. जेव्हा विरोधकांच्या समोर मुख्यमंत्री वसंतराव नाईक आले. आम्ही सर्वजनी  विरोध नकरता फक्त लाटणे झतात उंच धरून त्यांचे स्वागत केले. त्यांच्याबरोबर त्यावेळचे राज्यमंत्री शरद पवार होते. त्यांनी समोर आल्याबरोबर सांगितले “ तीन दिवसांच्या आत सर्व रेशन दुकानांतून अपेक्षित माल मिळेल? "त्यांच्या भाषणातील आश्वासनाने आमच्या मोर्चाचा हेतू सफल झाला होता.

  माझी खरी राजकीय कारकीर्द वसंतराव  नाईक सोबत 1972 पासून सुरू झाली. त्यावेळी भीषण दुष्काळ होता. अन्नधान्याचीही टंचाई होती. त्यावेळी  वसंतराव नाईक  मुख्यमंत्री असताना जनतेच्या अनेक प्रश्नांसाठी मी आवाज उठवत असताना केवळ, नाईक साहेबा मुळेच नेतृत्वाचे खरे गुण मला आत्मसात करता  आले. राजकारणातील असे अभ्यासु व्यक्ती  भविष्यात मिळणे ही आपवादात्मक बाब ठरेल असे वाटते..

       I  served as an MLA from May  1972 to 1975.  During these three years, we have consistently opposed  him in the Legislative Assembly.  In those days, We and their ideological struggle were firmly underway.  But as individuals, Vasantraoji Naik did not show his bitterness.  In the year 1972, we had organised a rally in the wake of the drought-like inflation. We were  3-4 thousand wives in the march.  The cabinet meeting was underway in the secretariat. The police chief said that  we should  return. We were excited to know what does the chief minister says to us in front of us?  We were told to stop march and return. The police did not know what to do. But I told the police commissioner, our march will be silently performed and nothing will happen.  In front of the opposition, Chief Minister Vasantrao Naik came. At that time Hon. Sharad Pawar  was then Minister of State in the Ministry, was with him, We all just greeted Naik instead of opposition. He came forward and said, "Within three days, all the ration shops will get the required goods?"  "With the assurance of his speech, the purpose of our march became successful. 
   My real political career started with Vasantrao Naik in 1972. There was a severe famine at that time. There was also a shortage of food. As Vasantrao Naik was tChief Minister, due to Naik, I learned  the true qualities of leadership while raising the voice of many questions of the masses.

Having such a studied person in politics seems to be a rare event in the future.

   Maharashtra' s soft - spoken, polished and superb Chief Minister Mr. Naik is undoubtedly a tremendous asset. I have had the good fortune to have met him when he was the Revenue Minister in the State. He stayed with me for nearly a week . I had thus a good opportunity to have a close glimpse of my dear friend in his most informal moments.

  What I appreciate most in him is that he is not a tub-thumping orator , but a practical social worker who speaks less and does note concrete work. It would be difficult to find others who have done so much for so many in  short a time . A farmer loves harmony all round and being born one, Vasantrao loves it interisely. That is why, perhaps, he has , with sweel reasonableness , travelled the arduous path, taking with him the opposition in his stride. On many momentous and controversial issues , he has unhestingly taken the counsel of his party and the views of the opposition and he has always come out with flying colours . I liked to watch him, calmly smoking his pipe, and undisturbed, solving many a tangled problem of the premier State in India . Nothing Tuffled him . Talking over a Chief Minister at a critical juncture , he has piloted the destiny of the State and has firmly laid the foundation of a propermiss Maharashtra.

    गोर बोलीभाषा  पिढ्यांनं पिढ्यापासुन प्रवाहित होत आली आहे.कालौघात स्वतःची लिपी नसल्यामुळे देवनागरी लिपीतील तिचे ठराविक स्वरुप निश्चित झाले आहे.
   गोरबोली बोलणा-या गोरबंजारा समाजात आपल्या बोलीभाषेविषयी कमालीची अनास्था आहे.आपण आपल्या भाषेचा गांभीर्यानेि विचारच करणे सोडुन दिले आहे.हेच मुख्यत्वे आजचे आपले व गोर बोली भाषेविषयीचे चिंतेचे कारण आहे.
    गोरबोलीला हजारो वर्षाची ऐतिहासिक परंपरा आणि समृद्ध वारसा आहे.ती जगातील सर्वात आदिम अशा सिंधू संस्कृतीशी नाते जोडुन तिचे अवशेष अंगाखांद्यावर घेऊन आजही जगते आहे. सिंधू संस्कृतीच्या पतनानंतर तेथील वारसा सांगत बंजारा समाजाची गोरबोली नंतरच्या काळात भटक्या जीवनअवस्थेत वावरणा-या गोर समाजाची लोकभाषा असल्याने, ज्या ज्या परिसरातुन त्याना मार्गक्रमण आपल्या आजीविकेसाठी करावा लागला, तेव्हा त्याना तेथील भाषा एकतर शिकावी लागली किंवा त्या भाषेतील दैनदिन व्यवहारासाठी आवश्यक शब्दाना आपल्या गोरबोलीत,भाषेत स्थान देऊन, समाविष्ट करुन घेत एक अरिहार्यताम्हणुन ते आत्मसात करावे लागले, काळाच्या ओघात आपल्या बोलीत नविन शब्दाना समाविष्ट करावे लागले.त्यामुळे या गोरबीलीचे पुरातन मुळ स्वरुप, शुद्धता टिकून ठेवता आली नाही.पर्यायी शब्दाची,  नवनव्या शब्दाची सातत्याने भर पडत गेली.दुस-या शब्दात सांगायचे  झाल्यास गोरबीली बदलत्या काळाबरोबर  अधिक समृद्ध होत गेली, हा तिचे आजचे बदललेले विकसित स्वरुप पाहता सांगता येईल.कोणतीही भाषा वा भाषेतून  येणारे भाषिक ज्ञान हा सतत वर्धिष्णू आणि विस्तारक्षम असावा लागतो.तरच तो समकालीन आणि अद्ययावत होऊ शकतो.आजच्या गोरबीलीच्या अवस्थेबद्दल बोलायचे झाल्यास, गोरबीलीचे पूर्वीचे समाजातील स्थान आणि लोकव्यवहारात मिळत गेलेला मान, आज टिकविणे हे तर फारच जिकरीचे सोबतच आव्हानात्मक झाले असुन तिचे पुर्वीचे वैभवशाली वर्धीत स्वरुप टिकवितांना पुरती दमछाक होतांना दिसत आहे. आजची गोरबीलीची अवस्था पाहु जाता गोरबोली शहरीभागात नोकरी वा काही कारणाने वास्तव्यास असणा-या व गोरबोली बोलणा-या बंजारा भाषीकामधुन नामषेश होण्याच्या मार्गावर असुन, तांड्यात सुद्धा ती गटांगळ्या खाताना, बाह्य भाषाचे सततचे आक्रमण झेलत कशीतरी तग धरुन आहे.मात्र,एकंदरीत पाहू जाता गोरबोलीचे अस्तित्व हे समाज- बांधवाच्या आणि विशेषत्वाने गोरबोली बोलणा-याच्या इच्छेवर अवलंबून राहणार आहे. येणा-या काळात आपली मायबोली-गोरबोली टिकवुन ठेवण्यात समाजबांधव कोणती भुमिका बजावतात यावर सारे तिचे भवितव्य निर्भर आहे.
     जगातील इतर बोलीभाषा आज जगाच्या पाठीवरून नामशेष होण्याच्या वा होतं असल्याचे भाषाशास्त्रीनी धोक्याचा इसारा दिला असुन बोलीभाषा प्रेमीनी आपआपल्या भाषेबाबत भविष्यातील धोके लक्षात घेऊन आजच सावध  राहण्याचे लक्षात आणुन दिले आहे, ते उगीच नाही? जगातील आपल्या सारख्या बोली भाषेची मरणकळा पाहताना आपली गोरबोली जगाच्या नकाशावरुन नामशेष होते की, आपला भाषीक असणारा गौरवशाली वारसा जपत टिकून राहते किंवा कसे, हे पाहणे मुळात औत्सुक्याचे ठरणार आहे.जो समाज आपल्या भाषेपासुन दुरावतो, तो आपल्या संस्कृतीपासुन तुटतो,असा भाषेपासुन दुरावलेला समाज  आपले अस्तित्व आपल्या हातानी संपवितो,सोबतच तो नष्ट होतो, हा इतिहास आहे. 
      यासाठी जर आपली बोलीभाषा टिकवायची असेल तर या लोकबोलीत, गोरबोलीत मोठ्याप्रमाणात साहित्याची निर्मिती झाली पाहिजे, नव्हे ते आज करणे फार गरजेचे झाले आहे.परंतु खेदाची बाब ही आहे कि, हे सारे समजुनही आजच्या पिढीचे गोरबंजारा लेखक,  ( काही सन्माननीय अपवाद आहेत) कवी, साहित्यिक मोठ्याप्रमाणात आपल्या गोरबोलीतुन लेखन करतांना, अभिव्यक्त होताना आजही दिसत नाहीत. याचे गांर्भियच त्यांना कळाले नाहीवकी काय? हे कशाचे लक्षण समजावे? 
     तेव्हा आताही वेळ गेलेली नाही. गोरबंजारा समाजात गोरबोलीसोडुन अन्य भाषेत बरेच प्रतिथयश विचारवूत,लेखक, कवी, साहित्यिक  चिंतनशील, वाचणीय लेखन करतांना दिसतात. त्यानी जर इतर भाषेचे व्यासपीठ न  वापरता आपल्या बोली- भाषेपासुन लेखन केले, तर ते गोरबोलीचे आपल्या मायबोलीचा पांग फेडल्यासारखे  निश्चितच होईल.नव्हे ती आपली गोरबोली टिकवुन ठेवण्यासाठी मोलाचे योगदान दिल्यासारखे होईल.आणि याची दखल येणारी पिढी नक्कीच घेईल. असे लेखन गोरबोलीतुन आपल्या हातुन घडले, तर गोरबोलीभाषेचा इतिहास लिहिताना येणारा काळ आपण दिलेल्या गोरबोलीतील लेखनाची, योगदानाची दखल निश्चित घेतल्याशिवाय राहणार नाही.आपल्या उल्लेखाशिवाय ते पुर्ण होऊच शकणार नाही, एवढे मात्र नक्की.  नव्हे तर गोरबोली टिकवायची, तगवायची नि वाढवायची असेल तर गोरबोलीतुन लिखाण करने ही काळाची गरज आहे. तरच आपण आपली मायबोली- गोरबोली टिकवुन ठेऊ शकू; नाहीतर आपली गोरबोली संपली, भाषा संपली की भाषेबरोबर येणारे वा बोलीभाषेतून केले जाणारे गोर संस्कार संपतील,गोरसंस्कार संपले की गोर समाज संपेल,आणि समाज संपला की आपली गोर संस्कृती संपेल, हे सांगायला कुणा ज्योतिषाची गरज भासणारा नाही.हे सारे आपल्या डोळ्यादेखत घडु द्यायचे नसेल तर वेळीच समाजातील सर्व बुद्धीजीवीनी सावध झालेले बरे.
         आजच्या आधुनिक तंत्रज्ञानाचा झपाटा पाहला की वाटते तो सा-या प्रादेशीक भाषाच्या मुळावर येणारा आहे.या भयशंकेने सा-यांनी चिंतीत होऊन चिंतन करण्याची गरज आहे. ज्याना ज्याना आपली बोली, भाषा जीवंत राहावी असा वाटते, अशा सा-यानीच बोलीभाषेसमोर उभ्या ठाकणा-या या आवाहनाचा मुकाबला करण्यासाठी चिंतन, मनन करणे व आपली भाषा म्हणजेच आपले समाजाचे अस्तित्व टिकवून ठेवण्यासाठी सगळ्यांनी आजपासुनच पडेल तो त्याग व योगदानाची भुमिका घेतली पाहिजे. तसेच आपल्या बोली- भाषेवर  येणारे भविष्यातील आव्हानाचा मुकाबला आपण कोणत्या विचाराने आणि आयुधाने करतो यावर आपले आणि आपल्या गोरबोलीचे भवितव्य अवलंबून राहणार आहे. हे बोलीभाषेसमोर उभे ठाकलेले आव्हान  परतवून लावण्याचे एकच सशक्त माध्यम म्हणजे समाजातील सगळ्या प्रथितयश लेखक, कवी, साहित्यिक  यानी आपल्या बोलीभाषेपासुनच यापुढे लेखन केले पाहिजे,तरच ते गोरबोलीचे आपल्या मायबोलीच्या  शतकाचे पांग फेडल्याचे सार्थक होईल व प्रयत्न सार्थकी लागण्याचे पुण्य आपल्या पदरी पडेल, एवढे मात्र नक्की. सोबतच आपल्या घरात गोर बोलीला मानाचे स्थान देणे, गोरबोलीत आपण बोलणे व आपल्या पाल्यांना गोरबोली येईल एवडे बघणे आपल्याच हातात आहे; हे कोण नाकारेल? बघुयात..काय करतात ते..!!

  Since his assumption of the Chief Ministership of the State in December 1963, Mr. Vasantrao Naik has been making earnest efforts to promote agricultural growth so that the State may become self-sufficient soon in its requirements of foodgrains and industrial raw materials. Mr. Naik was probably the first among the Chief Ministers to realise the importance of agriculture to the Indian economy and to formulate his policies on the basis of that conviction. Mr. Naik is most competent to speak on agriculture and allied subjects. Though a lawyer by training, he is by birth, upbringing and outlook a peasant. He has lived and laboured among the agricultural class and is fully conversant with its problems. He is convinced that India can become self-sufficient in foodgrains and in such essential raw materials as cotton and has set out to prove this by galvanizing the farm economy of his own State. He does not spare himself. His energy is indeed amazing. He works every day of the week from 9 a.m. to 1. a.m. Even so, he is always good tempered and soft-spoken. The burden of responsibility that has fallen upon him, is staggering and yet he is calm and unperturbed. He is always pleasant and persuasive and has never been harsh either in word or deed. His mental equipoise is indeed remarkable. He adds to this rare quality a quiet competence which greatly helps him to take quick and right decisions even on the most momentous issues. I do not want to smother Mr. Vasantrao Naik with superlative praise, but I do wish to take this opportunity of wishing him a long and active life so that he may continue to serve the State and the country with characteristic wisdom and moderation.

  डिसेंबर 1 9 63 मध्ये महाराष्ट्र राज्याचे मुख्यमंत्री म्हणून त्यांची पदभार सांभाळल्या नंतर श्री वसंतराव नाईक शेती वाढीस प्रोत्साहन देण्यासाठी प्रामाणिक प्रयत्न करीत आहेत. जेणेकरुन लवकरच राज्य आन्नधानौयाच्या बाबतीत स्वयंपूर्ण होईल.  अन्नधान्य आणि औद्योगिक कच्च्या मालाची गरज लक्षात घेऊन  श्री. नाईक कदाचित भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्थेच्या शेतीचा महत्त्व समजून घेण्यासाठी आणि मुख्यमंत्रीांच्या नात्यावर आधारित धोरणे तयार करण्यासाठी मुख्यमंत्र्यांतील आजतगायतचे पहिले निष्ठावान मुख्यमंत्री आहेत. या नात्याने श्री. नाईक शेती व संबंधित विषयांवर बोलण्यासाठी सर्वात सक्षम नेते आहेत.  ते अभ्यासू वकील असले तरी, ते जन्मातः शेतकरी कुटुंबातील आहे,  त्यांनी ग्रामीण शेती जवळून बघितलं शेती त्यांच्या समस्यांशी पूर्णपणे ज्ञात आहेत. त्यांना विश्वास आहे की भारत अन्नधान्य आणि अशा कच्च्या कच्च्या मालामध्ये परिपूर्ण बनू शकतो आणि स्वतःच्या राज्याच्या शेती अर्थव्यवस्थेला गॅल्वनाइझ करून हे सिद्ध करता येईल. असा त्यांचा गाढ विश्वास आहे. त्यांची काम करण्याची  ऊर्जा खरोखर आश्चर्यकारक आहे.  आठवड्याच्या प्रत्येक दिवशी ते सकाळी 9 . ते 1 पर्यंत काम करतात. तरीही, ते नेहमीच चांगले आणि सभ्य असतात. त्याच्यावर जी जबाबदारी आहे त्याचा भार खुप मोठा आहे आणि तरीही ते शांत आणि स्वस्थ आहे. ते नेहमीच आनंददायी आणि प्रेरणादायी असने हा त्यांच्या स्वभावाचा स्थायीभाव आहे.त्यांचे

शब्द किंवा कृतीत नेहमीच  अनुकूल असतात . त्याचे मानसिक कौशल्य खरोखर उल्लेखनीय आहे. त्यांच्या अशा या दुर्मिळ गुणवत्तेमध्ये शांत क्षमता कौशल्याची जोड आहे. ज्यामूळे ते अत्यंत महत्त्वाच्या विषयांवर अगदी जलद आणि योग्य निर्णय घेण्यास तत्पर असतात . मी श्रीमान वसंतराव नाईक यांची अशी उत्कृष्ट स्तुती करने अतिशयोक्ती ठरू नये.  परंतु मी त्यांना दीर्घ आणि सक्रिय राजकीय वाटचालची शुभ कामना देऊ  इच्छितो.ते सदैव  ते राज्य आणि देशाची सेवा आपल्या वैशिष्ट्येपूर्ण अशा संयम व अभ्यासू व्यक्तीत्वातून अविरत होत राहील.

 I ran into a stranger as he passed by 

"Oh, excuse me please" was my reply. 

He said, "Please excuse me too; wasn' t even watching for you." 

We were very polite, this stranger and I. 

We went on our way and we said good-bye 

But at home a different story is told, 

How we treat our loved ones, young and old 

Later that day, cooking the evening meal. 

My daughter stood beside me very still 

When I turned, I nearly knocked her down

 "Move out of the way," I said with a frown

 She walked away, her little heart broken. 

I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken. 

While I lay awake in bed, 

God's still small voice came to me and said,

 "While dealing with a stranger, common courtesy you use.

 But the children you love, you seem to abuse. -

    I  lost myself in the ferociousness of my purpose. I would not be beaten, I would not give in. I wrote harder than ever. At last, towards the end of the third month, I wrote finis. The relief, the sense of emancipation, was unbelievable. I had kept my word. I had created a book. Whether it was good, bad or indifferent I did not care.

  I chose a publisher by the simple expedient of closing my eyes and pricking a catalogue with a pin. I dispatched the completed manuscript and promptly forgot about it.

   In the days which followed I gradually regained my health, and I began to chafe at idleness. I wanted to e back in harness.   

  At last the date of my deliverance drew near. I went around the village saying good-bye to the simple folk who had become my friends. As I entered the post office, the post master presented me with a telegram-an urgent invitation to meet the publisher.I took it straight away and showed it, without a word, to John Angus. 

   The novel I had thrown away was chosen by the Book Society, dramatized and serialized, translated into 19languages, bought by Hollywood. It has sold millions of copies. It altered my life radically, beyond my wildest dreams... and all because of a timely lesson in the grace of perseverance. 

   But that lesson goes deeper still. Today, when the air resounds with shrill defeatist cries, when half our stricken world is wailing in discouragement: "What is the use...to work...to save...to go on living...with Armageddon round the comer?" I am glad to recollect it. The door is wide open to darkness and despair. The way to close that door is to go on doing whatever job we are doing and to finish it.

   The virtue of all achievenent, as known to my old Scots farmer, is victory over oneself. Those who know this victory can never know defeat.
